Note: This information is general in nature and doesn’t replace an individual assessment. If symptoms are severe, worsening, or you’re concerned, seek appropriate medical advice.

Common neck pain patterns we see

Neck symptoms can present in different ways. An assessment helps identify what may be contributing and what is most relevant for you, including prolonged postures, training changes, previous injuries or recurring flare-ups.

  • Stiffness or restricted turning with driving, desk work or sleep positions
  • Pain with sustained postures or longer periods of screen time
  • Headache patterns that may be linked to the neck
  • Symptoms that refer into the upper back, shoulder or arm

We focus on helping you understand your presentation and giving you practical steps to follow between appointments.

When to consider an appointment

Consider an assessment if symptoms are affecting concentration, work, training or sleep, or if the same problem keeps returning. Your Physiotherapist can help you understand suitable next steps and gradually rebuild confidence with movement and activity.

  • Symptoms that are not settling or are gradually worsening
  • Recurring flare-ups or stiffness that returns quickly
  • Reduced tolerance to desk work, driving or exercise
  • Uncertainty about what to do next

What an assessment may include

Your Physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, health history and daily demands before completing a physical assessment. This may include neck mobility, upper back movement, strength and control, and neurological screening where clinically appropriate.

  • Neck and upper back mobility assessment
  • Strength, control and tolerance to sustained postures
  • Nerve and neurological screening where indicated
  • Discussion of work setup, training loads, stress and sleep factors

How Physiotherapy may help

Care is tailored to your assessment findings and goals. Depending on your needs, it may include hands-on treatment, dry needling if suitable, activity guidance and exercises designed to improve movement confidence and load tolerance.

  • Hands-on treatment to address pain and mobility where appropriate
  • Education on pacing, flare-up management and posture tolerance
  • Targeted exercises for neck, upper back and shoulder support
  • Guidance for return to work, gym and daily activity

If your assessment suggests that imaging, GP review or input from another health professional is appropriate, your Physiotherapist will discuss this with you.

Who may benefit from an assessment?

An assessment may be useful when neck symptoms are affecting daily comfort, concentration, work tolerance or confidence with movement. Some people notice symptoms during desk-based work, while others experience flare-ups with training, travel or disrupted sleep.

  • Desk workers managing prolonged screen time and sustained postures
  • People with headache patterns that may be influenced by the neck or upper back
  • People noticing postural strain during work, driving or study
  • Gym-goers or active people with upper body tension or recurring flare-ups
  • People whose symptoms also involve the upper back or shoulder region

Neck symptoms can sometimes overlap with shoulder pain, headache or upper-body loading concerns. Dizziness can have several causes; where neck involvement appears relevant, assessment and appropriate referral may help clarify the next step.

Possible contributors to neck pain

Neck symptoms are often influenced by how the neck and upper back are tolerating the demands placed on them. It can help to identify what changed recently — workload, screen time, gym volume, stress, travel or sleep quality — and then build tolerance back up in steps.

  • Prolonged screen time or sustained postures
  • Rapid increases in training load or new exercises
  • Sleep setup changes or reduced sleep quality
  • Stress and increased muscle tension
  • Reduced movement variety across the day
  • Shoulder or upper-back demands, particularly with lifting or reaching overhead

What to do during a flare-up

During a flare-up, aim for calm, tolerable movement and reduce aggravating activities temporarily. Many people do best with small, consistent actions rather than complete rest. Your physiotherapist can guide what is appropriate for your presentation.

  • Gentle movement breaks across the day
  • Adjust tasks and positions rather than pushing through pain
  • Reduce sustained postures and change position regularly
  • Return to gym and loading gradually

When to seek urgent medical attention

Seek urgent medical review if you experience severe, worsening symptoms or significant neurological signs, such as progressive weakness, marked numbness, or symptoms following significant trauma. If you are concerned, seek appropriate medical advice.

  • Severe or rapidly worsening pain after a fall or accident
  • Progressive weakness, significant numbness or coordination changes
  • Severe headache with other concerning symptoms
  • Fever or feeling significantly unwell alongside neck pain

Neck pain FAQs

Is my neck pain caused by “bad posture”?

Many factors can influence neck pain. Rather than “perfect posture”, most people benefit from movement variety, sensible breaks, and building tolerance to the postures their day requires.

Do you treat headaches related to the neck?

Some headaches can be influenced by the neck and upper back. A Physiotherapy assessment can help determine whether neck structures, posture tolerance or movement sensitivity may be contributing. Neck stiffness and posture-related tension may sometimes contribute to headaches. You can also read more about headache Physiotherapy and common factors linked with head and neck discomfort.

Do I need scans for neck pain?

Not always. Imaging can be useful in specific situations, but many cases can be managed with assessment and a structured plan. If medical review, imaging or coordination with your GP is appropriate, we’ll discuss that with you.

How many appointments will I need?

There is no standard number because neck pain varies from person to person. After assessing you, your physiotherapist can explain the recommended approach, review your response to treatment and discuss whether further appointments are likely to be useful.

Do you offer dry needling?

Dry needling may be offered when clinically appropriate and with your consent. It’s used as one option within a broader plan that may also include hands-on treatment and exercise.
